David Crawford

Professor David Crawford is honorary chairman of the Creative Science Foundation, providing strategic advice to other directors concerning the purpose and values of the organization, together with the determination of  medium- and long-term goals.

David is a visiting Professorships at the Universities of Essex at Colchester and Ravensbourne University London, UK. He has worked for over 50 years across the telecoms/broadcast industries and UK academic institutions. His research interests are in creativity using volumetric imaging techniques, applications for mixed reality technologies, and networks for ‘beyond-UHD’ multimedia services. Within his industry roles, David works with start-up companies and R&D laboratories assessing cutting edge inventions and innovations, featuring the best of these in the “Future Zone” exhibition at the annual IBC Conference in Amsterdam. In his academic roles, David facilitates and lectures on Degree Apprenticeship courses at Ravensbourne, believing strongly in work-based learning curricula and collaborative industry-academia projects for the new generation of engineering trainees.

During his career, David has worked in senior positions at the Marconi CompanyBT, RE, Crown Castle (ex-BBC Transmission) and Harris Broadcasts (now GatesAir) and was the Business Director of a small start-up company, TeamCast (now ENENSYS Technologies), in France. He runs his own technical consultancy company “Telecoms Technologies”, and chairs and presents regularly at international conferences and events. David is a Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE), Member of the Royal Television Society (RTS), and is an ex-Council/Board Member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET). David is Special-Interest-Group Champion for Cambridge Wireless in the field of Content Production & Delivery; and as ex-Chairman of the IBC Conference for many years, he has maintained a long and successful collaboration between academia and the creative industries.

Currently,  in addition to his role in the Creative Science Foundation, David is Chairman of the Community Interest Company, PlayLa.bZ, which operates as a centre of excellence developing and publishing open source apps and procedures to facilitate volumetric moving-image and 3D sound content.
